Cool Rooms and Freezers

A walk in cool room or freezer room can be a large capital expense for a business that is just starting up. Therefore a quality installation is necessary to ensure the longevity of the room and the refrigeration equipment that goes with it. In the majority of places in Australia 75mm panel thickness for cool rooms and 100mm panel thickness for freezer rooms is the standard. However in tropical areas like Darwin, 100mm panel thickness is required for cool rooms and 150mm panel thickness is needed for walk in freezer rooms, to provide effective insulation needed to combat the heat and humidity.

Condensation occurs in high humidity areas which causes the panel to become saturated. This then breaks down, causing mould and bacteria to grow and eventually leading to the panel not providing effective insulation. If you are thinking of obtaining a quote from a supplier and your business is located in a tropical area, it’s important to check the panel thickness that you are being quoted.

It is also very important to check the refrigeration system capacity that you are being quoted. We have seen several cheaper kit cool rooms come onto the market, which supply less than sufficient refrigeration system capacity for tropical conditions. If you are located in cold climate areas these may work well but unfortunately if you are located in a tropical region, we suggest you look at a custom built room, allowing for the panel thicknesses mentioned above, with heavy duty refrigeration.
